Weekly recall roundup: 2 food safety alerts you need to know
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Youdle) – Two significant recalls have caught the attention of authorities this week. First, a veterinary product linked to fungal contamination has led to serious infections and fatalities in horses. Meanwhile, a recall of raw meat products due to lack of inspection highlights risks in our food supply chain.
Neogen Vet HYCOAT recall due to fungal contamination
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued warning letters to Neogen Corporation and Sciarra Aeromed, Inc. regarding Neogen Vet HYCOAT, a veterinary wound care product found to be contaminated with multiple fungi. This contamination has tragically resulted in serious infections in nearly 100 horses, with at least 20 requiring euthanasia. The presence of fungi like Purpureocillium lilacinum, which is resistant to antifungal treatments, poses severe risks when injected or even applied topically to wounds, leading to systemic illnesses.
